I am just finishing this off at the moment and agree with most of your review. I was thinking about it today and I was ended up pondering whether I am beginning to enjoy the Lord John books more than I enjoy the later Outlander books. They are less rambly and more structured and, oh yes, shorter.
I have been a big fan of the Outlander series but I must admit I have some reluctance to read the next one. I mean, I will read or listen to it of course, but I am a bit tired of the characters being so tortured all the time! I realise conflict is necessary to make the book interesting but the Claire, Lord John and Jamie "love triangle", and the Jem storyline are making me skeevy - I'm still not over Roger being nearly hanged! LOL

I think I liked the Quebec story best though.
